Objective: To enhance the patient experience and help create a healing environment for patients at Aurora Cancer Centers.
Day and Time: Monday - Friday 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Requirements:
- Able to stand, bend, and walk frequently during assignment.
- Functional vision, speech, and hearing.
- Ability to operate all equipment necessary to perform assignment.
- Must have knowledge of the Medical Center and areas within it.
- Successfully complete application process and on-going education as required by the Volunteer Services Department to maintain current status as a hospital volunteer.
- Learn and follow department specific policies and procedures (e.g. evacuation route).
- Understand and follow Aurora service philosophy.
Procedure: Report to designated staff member at Aurora Cancer Center.
Duties:
- Greet and escort patients throughout the cancer center.
- Round on patients in infusion room and waiting areas to introduce yourself and check on patient's needs, offer to visit and/or provide other distractions such as books/DVDs, etc.
- Round on patients in radiation oncology family waiting room to provide snacks, games, etc. and assist with escorting patients and family members.
- Participate in the radiation oncology ringing of the bell ceremony.
- Bake cookies for waiting area guests.
- Offer coffee, water and cookies to waiting area guests.
- Make popcorn and offer to patients in radiation oncology area.
- Restock supplies, blanket warmers.
- Restock patient snacks/juices.
- Clean infusion chairs and blood pressure cuffs between patients.
- Tidy waiting areas.
Restrictions:
- Volunteers do not push very large patients in a wheelchair.
- Volunteers do not assist with any medical task.
Training: By experienced volunteer or by paid staff
