Six certified aromatherapists now available for Green Bay patients

Wednesday, March 23, 2005

Aurora BayCare Medical Center and The Women’s Center on its fourth floor now offer six Certified Clinical Aromatherapy Practitioners (CCAPs) to serve patients both in the hospital and during their regular office visits.

Registered nurses Barb Michel and Terry Matzke along with massage therapists Pat Swan and Rose Verboomen are certified aromatherapists for Aurora BayCare’s hospital patients, while nurse practitioners Vicki Fresen and Jill DeYoung Reimer are CCAPs for The Women’s Center OB/GYN clinic.

Hospital patients can request an aromatherapy consult during their hospital stay, while visitors to The Women’s Center clinic can make appointments specifically with Fresen or Reimer by calling (920) 288-8400.

Aromatherapy is the use of therapeutic grade essential oils for healing purposes and to aid the alleviation of physical, emotional or spiritual discomfort. It is used to treat a wide variety of conditions, including anxiety, chronic pain, headaches, skin problems, arthritis, insomnia, stress, nausea, or to provide relaxation. The CCAP determines the best way to treat the patient by either inhalation, topical application, or by use of a light touch massage, also known as the “m” technique.

To achieve certification, candidates must complete a series of two-day courses spread out over approximately one year’s time. Each participant completes a case study on each of the 33 oils that are studied, plus a research study and a written exam.

Certification is conferred by R.J. Buckle Associates. The course is open to licensed health care professionals only.
