Pulmonary rehab program receives national certification

Wednesday, September 07, 2005

The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program at Aurora BayCare Medical Center has been certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR).

The certification process recognizes those programs rigorously reviewed by a national board and found to meet the outlined essential requirements for standards of care. Similar certification for Aurora BayCare’s cardiac rehabilitation program was achieved last year.

The pulmonary rehabilitation program at Aurora BayCare, which was started in January 2003, provides a continuum of services for patients with lung diseases or conditions such as asthma, emphysema and lung cancer. The program’s interdisciplinary team of specialists consists of a pulmonary medical director and rehab nurse coordinator, massage therapists, respiratory therapists, a registered dietitian and occupational therapists.

The team provides a strong support system and focuses on exercise and education to improve the patient’s physical and psychological stamina and self-care management, which in turn improves the quality of life for all pulmonary patients and their family members. The program’s goal is to achieve and maintain an individual’s maximum level of independence and functioning in the community.

“The Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program Certification indicates that our program follows current evidence-based practices to provide the best care to our patients,” said Shirley Brusewitz, cardiopulmonary rehab coordinator at Aurora BayCare. “Patients attending our program not only learn to manage their lung disease but gain a great deal of support from our multi-disciplinary team. The patients know we are here for them.”

Aurora BayCare Medical Center is a 132-bed, full-service tertiary care hospital located at 2845 Greenbrier Road on Green Bay’s east side.  It opened in September 2001 as a joint effort of Aurora Health Care and BayCare Clinic.

Aurora Health Care is a not-for-profit Wisconsin health care provider and a nationally recognized leader in efforts to improve the quality of health care. Aurora offers services at sites in more than 80 communities throughout eastern Wisconsin.

The AACVPR is a national, multi-disciplinary association dedicated to the improvement of clinical practice, promotion of scientific inquiry, and advancement of education for the benefit of cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation professionals and the patients they serve.
