Aurora VNA breaks flu-shot record

Thursday, January 19, 2006

More than 100,000 immunizations given throughout eastern Wisconsin this season

For the first time, Aurora Visiting Nurse Association broke the 100,000 mark by providing 100,139 flu shots in one season throughout eastern Wisconsin. Clinics ranged as far south as the Illinois border and as far north as Door County. Last year, the VNA provided 84,125 shots.

“Influenza can be lethal to people with chronic illness or who are over age 55,” said Lisa Taylor, RN, coordinator of Aurora VNA public flu clinics. “That’s why it’s important to reach as many people as possible – not only the people at higher risk, but those who may live or work with them. Our nurses worked extremely hard to achieve this record and to improve the health of many, many communities.”

Approximately 36,000 people die of the flu in America each year and more than 220,000 people are hospitalized with flu or complications from the flu.

Aurora VNA held more than 188 public clinics at malls, community centers, stores and other locations throughout eastern Wisconsin this season.

Aurora VNA is part of Aurora Health Care, a not-for-profit Wisconsin health care provider and a nationally recognized leader in efforts to improve the quality of health care.
