Eleventh Annual McGMO Golf Outing Benefits Cancer Patients

Thursday, June 26, 2008

Helping to improve the lives of local cancer patients is once again the purpose behind the July 25th McGMO Golfing for Cancer Care event.

The McGMO was established in 1998 in loving memory of Dean McGregor, Ivan Grover, Calvin Monroe, who had each lost their battle with cancer, and Kim O'Keefe, a courageous cancer survivor. All proceeds from this event are donated to the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic at Aurora Lakeland Medical Center in Elkhorn. This funding directly benefits cancer patients in Walworth County, who might otherwise have to travel great distances to gain access to cancer treatment.

Check in and lunch will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 25, 2008, at Delbrook Golf Course, 700 S. 2nd St., Delavan. Registration for the golf outing can be accessed on the web at The ticket price for the golf outing is $100 per person, which includes 18 holes of golf, an opportunity for prizes, lunch, dinner, and an auction.

If you would like to attend the dinner only, it's $25 per person and reservations are recommended. Sponsors are needed for the event. If you would like to be a sponsor, there are five different levels of sponsorship. The par sponsor is $100; the birdie sponsor is $300; the eagle sponsor is $500; the double eagle sponsor is $1000; and the crystal eagle sponsor is $2000. Monetary gifts to the event will be gratefully accepted at any time.

To participate in the event, please call Mike or Lori Grover at 262-728-3779 or visit Sponsorship deadline is July 15. There is no deadline for the golf outing.

Laverne Schmidt, regional director of philanthropy, Aurora Health Care, said that over the years, the McGMO event has helped support many projects to help cancer patients. Support from last year's McGMO went toward the addition of flat screen televisions and additional treatment chairs in the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic.

"The proceeds from this year's McGMO will go towards funding a cancer care coordinator at Aurora Lakeland Medical Center," she said.

Schmidt lauded the efforts of the McGMO founders and the volunteers who are dedicated to helping anyone touched by cancer.

"Many times people think about doing something for others, but this group took action, and year after year they remain committed to making life better for local cancer patients," she said. "They have been instrumental in supporting the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic which provides vital cancer services close to home.''

Last year, the event raised $42,000. Since its inception in 1998, the McGMO has raised more than $200,000 to help provide enhanced patient services, equipment and new technology. The clinic makes it possible for cancer patients to stay close to home during this crucial and often difficult part of life.

"To see this kind of dedication and commitment come from the community is phenomenal,'' said Schmidt. "We are so grateful for the generosity of the McGMO founders and volunteers for their energetic support.''
