Milwaukee, WI -- Debra Miller has joined Aurora Health Care as vice president of corporate affairs in the South Region, which encompasses Kenosha, Racine and Walworth counties.
"We are pleased to have someone with Debra's depth of talent join us," said Kimberly Welch, senior vice president of corporate affairs. "Her experience includes a wide spectrum of leadership roles in public relations, marketing and consulting."
In 2006, Miller received the Gold Anvil, the highest award given by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA) and the public relations industry, for her contributions to the profession. In 1997, she became president of PRSA during its 50th anniversary year, making her the first woman of color, the first African-American and the second educator to head the 30,000-member organization.
"I'm pleased to be a part of Aurora, which is recognized across the country for its focus on a patient care experience that is individualized and unique," Miller said. "Aurora's caregivers have done much to create a culture of quality that is second to none, and I look forward to working with the communities we serve to help people better understand what sets us apart."
In her previous position, Miller led a team of professional communicators who successfully implemented an integrated marketing and communications plan for the only private, historically black college or university classified as a doctoral/research-intensive institution in the country. Under her leadership, the team branded Clark Atlanta University and helped to expand its global reputation as an institution that produces leaders who are empowered to change their communities, the nation and the world.
Miller is a seasoned communications strategist with extensive experience in reputation management, diversity communications and communications research and measurement. Miller also served as a vice president for corporate communications for Bank of America, the senior consultant/account supervisor for the Jackson Heath Group, Sinickas Communications, Inc. and as the managing partner of Global Communications Strategists, Inc., a metro-Atlanta-based consultancy. In her role as an agency executive she has worked for some of the world's most well-known brands, including Wal-Mart, Delta Airlines, Levi-Strauss Canada, Haverty's, Cingular Wireless, Astra Zeneca, Biz360, Capital One Financial Service and Shell Oil.
In addition, she has worked with health care facilities such as Morehouse School of Medicine Family Practice Center, Broward County Hospital District, The Preferred Medical Group, Coral Gables Hospital, Jackson Memorial Hospital and the Eastern Virginia Health Systems Agency.
Miller, a graduate of Hampton University, has a master's degree in public relations and journalism from Ohio State University and a doctorate in adult education and human resources development from Florida International University.
