According to the National Cancer Institute, digital mammography is better than film mammography in screening women under age 50, women of any age with very dense breasts, and women of any age who have had their last menstrual period within 12 months of their most recent mammogram.
Digital images have better detail and allow radiologists to manipulate the magnification, orientation, brightness and contrast of the mammogram image.
Compared to film mammograms, digital mammography uses less radiation. It also involves a shorter exam time-approximately half the time of a standard film-based mammography-because it provides instant images rather than waiting for films to be developed.
