Annual McGMO golf event benefits Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic at Aurora Lakeland Medical Center

Wednesday, August 12, 2009

Delavan, Wis.—The 12th annual McGMO Golfing for Cancer Care event was held recently at Delbrook Golf Course and raised $44,000 to help improve the lives of cancer patients in Walworth County. The event raises funds to benefit cancer patients at the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic at Aurora Lakeland Medical Center.

Since its inception, the McGMO has raised nearly $300,000 to enhance patient services, acquire equipment, and invest in new technology. Proceeds from this year’s event will be used to develop and fund a cancer care navigator position that will serve cancer patients at Aurora Lakeland Medical Center.

“With the generous support of our McGMO partners, our cancer patients and their families will have access to a health care professional who can guide them through the entire treatment process,’’ said Kathy Skowlund, vice president and chief administrative officer, Aurora Lakeland Medical Center. “This position will play a significant role in making sure that the care and treatment of our cancer patients is coordinated and seamless.’’

The McGMO was established in 1998 in loving memory of Dean McGregor, Ivan Grover, Calvin Monroe, who have lost their battle with cancer and Kim O’Keefe, a courageous cancer survivor.

Michelle Weber, philanthropy officer, Aurora Health Care, said the efforts of the McGMO founders and the volunteers who are dedicated to helping anyone affected by cancer is awesome.

“Unfortunately, we all know someone touched by cancer,’’ she said. “For the volunteers and founders of this event, it is a personal mission and we are grateful for their support and commitment in bettering the lives of cancer patients in Walworth County.’’

Mike Grover, one of the founders of the McGMO, said community support for the event continues to grow each year and this year was no exception.

“I think it speaks to the dedication that our team brings to the event,’’ said Grover. “Tim McGregor, my wife Lori and I, John Monroe, and Kim O’Keefe, we all have our own powerful stories to share on this. Our commitment, in partnership with Aurora, to help other families dealing with cancer remains strong.’’
