Aurora Health Center in Racine presents breast health fair

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Racine, Wis.—As part of Breast Cancer Awareness month, the caregivers at Aurora Health Center in Racine are offering a free breast health fair from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., Tuesday, October 6, at Aurora Health Center, 8348 Washington Ave. The event will be held in the large conference room.

The fair will include information on women’s health, breast health, and digital mammography. In addition, David Needle, M.D., general surgeon, Aurora Health Center, will be on hand at 12:15 p.m. to discuss the latest information on breast cancer prevention. The fair is open to Aurora caregivers and the community. Registration is not required.

Jean Gausche, breast care coordinator, Aurora Health Center, said the event is an opportunity to learn about maintaining optimum breast health, the latest in prevention, and an opportunity to network and share information with others.

“Everyone knows someone touched by breast cancer,’’ she said. “Our main message is that screening and early detection are the keys to saving lives and better outcomes.’’

She said an annual mammogram for women over age 40 and clinical breast exams should be part of any periodic health exam. A mammogram can detect the earliest signs of breast cancer, often before any physical symptoms develop. According to statistics from the state of Wisconsin, in 2004, 59 percent of Wisconsin women aged 40 and older reported having had a mammogram the previous year.
