Two Aurora Health Care caregivers nominated for national Spirit of Caring Award

Tuesday, December 01, 2009

Two Rivers, Wis.- Two health care caregivers at Aurora Medical Center in Two Rivers were nominated for the “Spirit of Caring Award” by Planetree Inc.

The “Spirit of Planetree Awards” were created to promote patient-centered care by publicly recognizing individuals who personalize and demystify the health care experience for others.

Family Medicine Physician Robert Gahl, M.D., was nominated for the “Spirit of Caring Award” because of his compassionate patient care.

On call one evening, Dr. Gahl responded to the care of a gravely ill elderly man. The man would most likely not survive through the night. Dr. Gahl phoned the man’s daughter who said the family had airline tickets and would be flying out the next day. When Dr. Gahl told the daughter that her father would most likely not make it through the night, the daughter asked Dr. Gahl to give her father a big hug and whisper, “Paula loves you very much” into his ear. He did, and it is such warm and caring gestures like this that exemplify patient-centered care.

Pam LeGreve, food service lead, was nominated for the “Spirit of Caring Award,” because she is a leader in the Food & Nutrition department and a pioneer in the Aurora Medical Center Manitowoc County patient-centered care journey.

LeGreve was one of the first Planetree facilitators at her facility and co-leader of the hospital nutrition team. Her constant focus on expanding and improving nutrition services for staff, patients and visitors is an inspiration to other caregivers.

Aurora Health Care is a not-for-profit Wisconsin health care provider and a nationally recognized leader in efforts to improve the quality of health care. Aurora offers services at sites in more than 90 communities throughout eastern Wisconsin.
