Race, Families and Milwaukee Summit explores family conversations on raceWednesday, October 05, 2011
Milwaukee, Wis. – Aurora Family Service will be hosting the fifth annual Race, Families and Milwaukee Summit, featuring keynote speaker Michele Norris, co-host of National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered,” on Friday, Oct. 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Italian Community Center, 631 E. Chicago Street.
Norris will kick off the summit with a provocative discussion on racism’s legacy in our community and the role of family conversations about race. With a panel of local leaders, she will explore why family conversations about race are so difficult, why they are so important and how to get started.
Afternoon workshops will also be held on topics including:
• The Role of Secrets in Families;
• Talking Race Across Generations; and
• How to Start the Discussion.
Discussion leaders will include Martha Barry and Annika Leonard of YWCA, Corry Joe Biddle of FUEL Milwaukee/MMAC, and Ann Starr and Jane Pirsig of Aurora Family Service.
Admission is $30 for community members and $15 for students. All proceeds benefit the Aurora Family Service Fund for Advocacy, which supports the annual Race, Families and Milwaukee Summit, Family Issues Forums and other advocacy programs in the community.
