New partnership enhances neonatal care at Aurora BayCare Medical Center

Wednesday, April 07, 2004

Agreement also expands access to specialists from Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin

GREEN BAY, Wis., Aurora BayCare Medical Center, together with leaders from Children’s Specialty Group, a joint venture of Children’s Hospital and Health System and the Medical College of Wisconsin, today announced an agreement that will provide additional neonatal care at the Green Bay hospital.

The new partnership will bring to four the number of board-certified neonatologists in the neonatal intensive care unit at Aurora BayCare. These physicians provide around-the-clock care for low-birthweight babies, babies born prematurely and other critical-care newborns.

As part of the new agreement, Aurora BayCare will work with the Medical College and Children’s Specialty Group, whose physicians are on staff at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, to provide pediatric subspecialty care in Green Bay.

Neonatologists working at Aurora BayCare also will have opportunities for continuing medical education at Children's Hospital in Milwaukee.

“This partnership will allow us to take a number of steps that will improve the quality of care and enhance access to care for children in northeastern Wisconsin,” said Thomas P. Koehler, M.D., a Green Bay internist and president of Aurora Health Care’s North Region.

Frank Mattia, M.D., a neonatologist and medical director of the NICU at Aurora BayCare, said, “This is a wonderful opportunity to bring the expertise of the Children’s Hospital specialists to Green Bay. This will be of great benefit to families in our community.”

Aurora BayCare’s neonatal intensive care unit opened last year. It is now staffed by three board-certified Aurora neonatologists. Under the new agreement with the Medical College of Wisconsin, a fourth neonatologist is being recruited to work full time at Aurora BayCare.

The neonatal intensive care unit is part of The Women’s Center at Aurora BayCare. Opened in October 2002, The Women’s Center pulls together the area’s largest OB/GYN physician group, the only full-service fertility center, a breast clinic and other women’s health specialists. Aurora BayCare was the first hospital in the area to offer high-tech advances in women’s health care such as digital mammography and high-dose-rate brachytherapy.

Aurora BayCare Medical Center is a 126-bed, full-service tertiary care hospital located at 2845 Greenbrier Road on Green Bay’s east side. It opened in September 2001 as a joint effort of Aurora Health Care and BayCare Clinic. The two organizations also are partners in the Aurora BayCare Health Center, which opened in fall 2002 on Green Bay’s west side.
